Journal 9: Composing in Context
After the viewing and reading I have developed a slightly deeper understanding of composing and context and then developed a broad understanding what compose in context may mean and the things it may include.
Composing is the solid act of bringing different genres and contexts together. It is the bringing of all things said, seen, remembered, felt, understood and choosing pieces and sorting it into a puzzle you create, matching the different edges and curves to make the puzzle complete you find that composing requires the contemplation of what suits each other best. For example in the photo essay the third picture is the composing of many women together signaling unity for a purpose they all believe in. Once you read the essay portion you realize that they are part of the Women’s International League fighting or peace and freedom. These women hold up a peace banner to represent a cause a cause of harmony that can and will lead to the discontinuation of violence. The women portraying unity and peace creates an opportunity to rationally think for just a moment that a world that can be accepting and co existing can be a better world regardless of the difference. The picture followed by the world allowed me to see all this and take into my own interpretation what composing does allows the audience to see far beyond what is shown to them.
Context has always been in my perspective about what is written or shown to an audience it is how it written and why. After reading the interview by Hooks I am able to say that context is not just was is written, Hooks says “Part of what has made me distance myself from writing literacy criticism as much as I write other things is that literacy criticism doesn’t participate as much as I would like it to in creating critical readership, in educating people for critical consciousness.” Context does involve the writing and the type of writing but also the effects of what that particular writing may lead the audience to think or believe. Context is the justification or re thinking of a though that is being presented its purpose serves to further investigate in the mind of the audience, it does not serve as a temporary consideration of what something could have meant or was not.
So from my understanding compose in context means observing what is needed to reach the purpose of a particular context. Compose: gather material, sources, knowledge about a subject to then write within that context. Ensure that was is being written serves to that purpose and not any other which may veer the attention of the audience astray.
