Journal 8: Materiality
As I began to read Lessig notion of quotation and citation as a requirement and a form of payment for appreciating someone’s work enough to want to implement it into one’s writing. He also elaborates that no one in writing believes that “permission beyond that simple payment should be required,” emphasizing that writing that is remixed should recognize the other author band with that done it should suffice. He explained the RW culture to be one that is known but maybe overlooked, it is the process of using material that has been read such as: thoughts, ideas, perspectives etc… and taking those into account to create another piece of writing that may incorporate old work and make it into new work by adding, changing, editing it. Lessig’s argument is he thinks it is unwise to sensor media (resources) because it takes away and restricts people. Also that in the case that society finds that certain resources are being censored but should not be it could create chaos. Based on his argument there is in essence a sword of double edge, censorship could either help or consume the medium. There can exist some restrictions and regulations to keep a level of balance or either consume the mediums by applying these rules which may hold a larger weight, by having the main concentrate on the quoting and remixing of the writing instead of allowing freely mediums to develop.
This notion relates to composing because it is now introducing the effects it may have such as having to credit someone for every possible thing in one’s writing, seeing that ideas are reused yet transformed into different sorts of writing this notion still emphasis that it should give a simple payment even if the new writing is not in agreement with previous made ideas. It relates to collaborating because writers used knowledge they know to develop their writings, this knowledge comes from the collaborative effort of learning techniques and information readily available to one from others, this notion would also restrict the collaboration to accrediting each thing (article, magazine, book, etc..) and each person (professor, family, friends, etc..) for the things one is aware of and uses in their writing process. It relates to remixing because in one’s writing they are reflecting on these previous written thoughts and analyzing them and interpreting to a new form that they understand. This notion restricts remixing it does not allow one to have a free space to interpret the information and use one owns opinions and perspectives, it limits them to stating who made the former claim.
Gladwell suggest that the importance of material has to do with the learning process of how writing is not restricted to what most writing one does on a daily basis. Material shows that there are many ways of using different sorts of mediums in one’s writing. The importance of material has to do with how well one is able to use it in their writing and whether or not it serves its purpose. If the material does not evolve into what the bigger picture is this source of material was not chosen wisely and vice versa. Material contributes to Lessig’s text because he chose a medium by which it was easy to understand the purpose of what he was writing, one that contributed to the cause. This may have helped me realize exactly what it is I must look for when I’m deciding what genres and media to use in my upcoming assignment.
