Journal 7: Re-defining Genre and Media
Comment on podcast:
As I began to listen to the podcast I also began to understand the depth of words and the place they hold in the daily life of a human being. It was very interesting to hear and see the different stories that developed throughout the podcast my favorite would have to be the one about Susan and the deaf man; the development of a language to help another individual done by a women with her own situation to deal with. With time and patience he finally understood (8:08) that itself was extraordinary. I was instantly intrigued about the difficulty that she overcame with time and then used the same component that taught her to teach another being in a complete different circumstance that she could still in a way relate to. I learned the realistically at this time language is of essence it is crucial to our lives, it is the way in which we interpret thoughts, feelings, morals, ideas, reasoning etc. It is the component that allows there to be an understanding not just to others but to oneself. This podcast sincerely affected my understanding of composing because it gave insight on how heavy words connect almost each and every aspect of our lives to something else and that something else happens to be the process of composing gathering all insight and describing them in words. The video had little to no words but each scene was very descriptive of its purpose, the images and scenarios were easy to understand with no words. Yet it also made me think about the fact that there are no words which means there is a wide range of what each scene may have meant to me rather then it be strictly for one purpose. Genre was a word that I could only define in terms of a specific category since I began my ENC 1102 class I have a much deeper understanding of what genre is. Genre to me is the collective gathering of words, words that develop from experiences, desires, hopes, beliefs etc… Genre and media share a relationship and that relationship is based on personal interest if people have a particular interest in a subject the media will produce a source that fancy’s the reader with words; communicating and allowing the reader to read or hear the information they wanted to acquire from personal desire.
Response to a post:
Nora I completely understand why your definition of genre has changed because mine has as well. I use to think of it the way you use to think of it. Also I am in agreement with you about the relationship the media and genre share.
